Checks you can safely do yourself

1. Check the thermostat

6. Open your vents and clear the returns

Walk the house and confirm supply registers are open and nothing is sitting on top of a return grille. Closing vents in unused rooms does not save money on a central system. It raises static pressure, cuts airflow across the coil, and is a common cause of both weak cooling and a frozen coil. Furniture pushed against a return does the same thing.

Measure it yourself: the 16-to-22 degree test

A working air conditioner should cool the air passing through it by 16 to 22 degrees. Measure the air at a return grille, then measure the air coming out of a supply vent near the air handler, and subtract. If the difference is in that band, your equipment is cooling correctly and the problem is somewhere else, usually ductwork, insulation, or an undersized system. Below 16 degrees points to low refrigerant or an airflow restriction.

Temperature split (delta T): The difference between the air entering your air conditioner and the air leaving it. On a residential system in cooling mode, 16 to 22 degrees is the normal range.

Run the system 15 minutes first so the readings settle. Use the same thermometer for both measurements, and use a probe thermometer rather than an infrared gun, which reads surface temperature instead of air temperature.
